Remembrance Poem

Written by Elizabeth Thomas| November 2022

HE NEVER KNEW YOUR NAME

A YOUNG MAN ON THE BATTLEFIELD

HIS LIFE HAS BARELY BEGUN

HE HOPES AND PRAYS THAT HE’LL SURVIVE

AND THEN HE HEARS THE GUN.

IN THOSE LAST FEW SECONDS

AS HIS HEARTBEAT SLOWS TO REST

HIS THOUGHTS BEGIN TO WANDER

TO THOSE HE LOVES THE BEST.

HE HAD PLANNED A FUTURE LIFE

HIS SWEETHEART HE WOULD WED

NOW HE WILL NO LONGER KNOW

THE PASSION OF THE MARRIAGE BED

OR THE CHILDREN THEY WILL NEVER HAVE

OF HOW MUCH SHE WILL CRY

THAT IN THIS FIGHT FOR FREEDOM

WHY DOES HE HAVE TO DIE?

HIS MOTHER, FATHER, SIBLINGS

FOR HIM THEY ALL WILL GRIEVE

HE WILL NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN

SO HARD FOR HIM TO BELIEVE.

HE HAD HOPES AND PLANS AND DREAMS

OF THE LIFE HE HAD IN STORE

HIS PLANS AND HOPES DIED WITH HIM

HIS DREAMS THEY ARE NO MORE.

HE NEVER KNEW YOUR NAME

OR OF THE FREEDOM YOU EXPECT

HE DIED TO SAVE THAT FREEDOM

HIS DEATH DESERVES RESPECT.

SO, REMEMBER HIM WITH HONOUR

WEAR A POPPY WITH GREAT PRIDE

HE NEVER KNEW YOUR NAME

BUT FOR YOU HE SADLY DIED.

REMEMBER THEM.
